History & Origins
The Jesus Psalter is found in English Catholic print by 1529 and is traditionally associated with the Brigittine priest Richard Whitford. The attribution of authorship is not fully certain.
It consists of fifteen principal petitions accompanied by repeated invocations of the name of Jesus. It remained in Catholic prayer manuals during the centuries after the English Reformation.
Its relative obscurity today may reflect changes in popular prayer-book use and the loss of older English devotional customs; a single cause cannot be established.
Traditional Promises & Spiritual Fruits
This devotion does not depend on an approved list of supernatural promises. Its traditional purpose is to deepen trust in the Holy Name of Jesus, foster repentance, and seek grace for Christian living.
Avoid treating historical devotional recommendations as guarantees of particular results.
Intercessions
A fitting prayer for conversion, perseverance, temptation, forgiveness, and confidence in the mercy of Jesus.
Christ Himself is addressed in each petition; the devotion is not attached to a separate patron saint.
