St. Leonard Franciscan Way Of The Cross

Follow the fourteen stations with older Franciscan prayers attributed to St. Leonard of Port Maurice.

History & Origins

St. Leonard of Port Maurice (1676–1751) was a Franciscan preacher who spread devotion to the fourteen Stations of the Cross across Italy. Historical scholarship associates him with hundreds of installations of the Stations.

Pope Clement XII extended permission for the erection of Stations beyond Franciscan churches in 1731. This reflects Church support for the devotion; it does not amount to separate approval of every word in every historical meditation text.

The app presents an English rendering based on an older Italian text attributed to St. Leonard and distinct from the more familiar meditations of St. Alphonsus Liguori.

Traditional Promises & Spiritual Fruits

The Stations have a history of ecclesiastical encouragement and indulgences, but a web-based devotional exercise should not be advertised as automatically fulfilling the current conditions for any indulgence.

No private-revelation promises are claimed for the translated text.

Intercessions

Suitable for repentance, perseverance under suffering, sorrow for sin, contemplation of the Passion, and prayer for the conversion of hearts.

How to Pray

Follow the traditional fourteen stations from Christ’s condemnation through His burial.

The app includes opening prayers, meditations in an older Franciscan voice, and the accompanying common prayers, with the Via Dolorosa indicating progress.
